Hi there! Welcome to Be Debt Free America. My name is Chris. I’m just a small-town, average guy with an interest in financial matters. And guitars. Oh, and strawberry and cream-covered waffles. I hang-out in the Northwest with my lovely wife and beautiful children. My children, for those who may be curious, are debt-free. At least so far. But then again, they’re still in grade school.
Why Be Debt Free America?
As you know, America has a love-affair with debt. In fact, our economy is based on debt. That is all fine and dandy for the big banks. There is a lot of money to be made in interest payments. But it’s not so hot for the little guy. Yeah, I know it can be fun to get the big screen tv without cash in hand. Just plunk down that Visa card. You know, instant gratification. In the end, however, the card plunkee pays big time.
My hope is that through this site and my debt-eliminator software (yes, I’m a web developer as well), that many more Americans will find the support, courage, know-how and commitment to become debt free. So the call, rather than “live beyond your means, America” is now “be debt free, America”.
My Early Years
I actually started out pretty good, going through college. I didn’t take out any student loans until my senior year. And I paid my credit card off, with a $300 limit, every month. Somehow I sensed that I didn’t like debt. Then one day, I had an opportunity to start a business. Months into it, we were a bit short on cash. Alright, we didn’t have any cash at all. So I went to the bank and got some cash advances. The business didn’t make it. The banks didn’t care. I found myself $35,000 in debt on credit cards. And no job.
I understand that isn’t as big a hole as others have dug. But it was pretty deep for me. I spent the next 3 years giving the bank everything I made, after living expenses. In the end, I realized I was right. I didn’t like debt. Not one bit. But I also realized how good it feels to be debt free – not be be slave to anybody.
